Seven students represent SSA at PHSSL competition in Susquehanna.

- Tech & Learning Day in-service program provided professional development workshops for SSA teachers on new ways to integrate technology in the classroom.

- Charlotte McDaniel sings in the children's chorus of the opera, now playing at the Benedum Center through April 6.

- SSA tennis players Emma Perelman, Amanda Murphy and Madison Mordoh host the seventh annual fundraiser for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

- A group of seven students and teachers remodeled a home in Sharpsburg for a family of seven.

- NYC event is April 23 at 6 p.m. at the Yale Club; Philly event is April 24 at 6 p.m. at The Racquet Club.

- 14 Middle and Senior School students competed at the Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair on March 28.

- Cooper Kann took third place in section but fell in first round of WPIAL tourney.

- Tevin Mickens and Tarah Wright win $2,500 scholarships in competition that recognizes outstanding Black American high school students.

- Max Prizant cleared a height of 13'7" at the Apollo Ridge meet on April 8.

- Junior Zoe Horne's Pittsburgh Predators team won the bronze medal in the Tier 2 U14 division.

- Best-selling author and professor lectures on food, agriculture, health and the environment. VIP tickets include a pre-show farm-to-table reception with Pollan and some of Pittsburgh's top chefs.

- Students learn beginning programming logic in computer class.

- Isabel Calihan and William Davis advance to the national competition in Atlanta in June.

- Freshman Kay Hughes' griffin sculpture is on display at the C.C. Mellor Memorial Library in Edgewood.

- Julian Schwartz to participate in British American Drama Academy's Midsummer Conservatory Program in summer 2014.

Featured speaker Gilman is the Pittsburgh City Councilman for District 8.

Max Devorris and Jake Lydon Two Shady Side Academy boys' prep ice hockey players have won a national title! Senior Jake Lydon and junior Max Devorris were both members of the Mid-State Mustangs team that won the USA Hockey Tier II Youth 18U AAA National Championship on Sunday, April 6, in Wayne, N.J. The Mustangs captured the title with a resounding 6-1 victory over the Delaware Ducks in the championship game.

Lydon led the Mustangs to victory in the title game with a hat trick, scoring one goal in each period with ferocious left-handed blasts. “We didn’t come here to just make it or get to the semifinals or even the finals,” Lydon said. “We came here to win the whole thing. It’s amazing, the best feeling ever, knowing that I had such a big game in a big game. My teammates just kept getting the puck to me and I just kept scoring.”

Devorris will return to the Mid-Mustangs next year as they attempt to hold on to the national title in 2015.
